User Interface

Image Placeholder

This page will allow you to edit the more general settings across webmail, such as the Time/date formats and your preferred language.

  • Language - This will change the language of the text within webmail, minus your emails themselves. If you ever get stuck on a language you are not familiar with, use this guide here in the Change Mailbox and interface section to get back to your preferred language.
  • Time Zone - This will adjust dates within webmail to your chosen timezone. Selecting Auto will use your devices set timezone.
  • Time Format - This will allow you to set how you prefer the time to be displayed. Selecting the options with am/AM at the end will convert times to a 12 hour format.
  • Date Format - Here you can specify what order you will like the date to be in as well as the the dividing icon such as a slash, dash or a dot.
  • Pretty Dates - Enabling this will convert recent dates into a more readable way. For instance, instead of displaying today's date and time it will show as "Today at 12:00".
  • Display next list entry after delete/move - When a message is deleted or moved, having this enabled will display the next email in the queue. Having this off will close the preview pane instead.
  • Update (check for new messages, etc.) - You can specify how often the page will refresh and check if new mail has arrived. You can turn this off if you prefer to manually refresh the page.
  • Display Font Size - This will change the size of the text throughout your webmail. This will not affect the text within emails.
  • Handle Popups - If you have this option disabled, any popup windows in webmail will open in it's own window and it's size will automatically configured. Enabling this will allow the window to abide by the settings of your browser, such as open new windows in new tabs instead.
  • Register Protocol Handler - When clicking on an email address online, such as this one: help@aluminati.net, it will open your default email application. Clicking the link provided allows you to set webmail as your default email program. You may need to apply some extra steps depending on the device you are using.

Mailbox View

Image Placeholder
This page will allow you to change settings relating to how you view your inbox.

  • Layout - These options will change the way your emails are listed. See our layout guide in the Change Mailbox and interface section here
  • Mark messages as read - This allows you to set the delay between clicking on the email and then automatically setting the email as read.
  • Expand Message threads - You can select whether you would like your threads to be expanded by defaults or not. You can read more about threads in the Threads section here.
  • Rows per page - By default, each page in your inbox will display 50 emails at a time. This option will allow you to specify a different number. You can set a smaller amount if you are experiencing a slow internet speed.
  • Check all folders - By default, only the inbox will notify you if you receive a new message (with notifications turned on). Enabling this will allow notifications for all folders.
  • Display browser notifications - This will show a notification card generated from your browser whenever you get a new message (you may need to turn on notifications from within your browser).
  • Display desktop notifications - This will show a notification card generated from your device whenever you get a new message (you may need to turn on notifications for this within your device).
  • Play sound - When one of the above notifications triggered, you can use this option to allow a sound alert to also be played.
  • Close desktop notification - This sets how long the notification card will display for.

Displaying Messages

Image Placeholder

This page's settings are for when you are viewing an individual email you have received.

  • Open message in new window - Having this enabled will open an email in a new window/tab when you click on a email.
  • Show email address with display name - By default, the sender will only be displayed by the display name such as "Jeff Smith", switching this on will also display their email address alongside this. For example, "Jeff Smith - <Jeff@email.com>".
  • Display HTML - HTML allows the use of text formatting and displaying images. If you prefer plain text, disable this option.
  • Allow remote resources (images, styles) - Formatted (HTML) messages can contain references to images which have to be loaded from a remote server. This can harm your privacy and reveal to the sender that you opened the message. This technique is often used by spammers to verify that your email address works and you may receive more spam. By default this is switched off, but you can turn it on for contacts only, or everyone if you wish.
  • On request for return receipt - A sender of an email can request a read receipt. This will send them an email informing them that you opened the email. If you would like to change this, you can select from the options below:
    • Ask each time - By default, it will ask you each time they are requested if you would like to send one.
    • Send Automatically - This will always send the read receipt to the requester.
    • Send to contacts, otherwise ask - This will always send the read receipt if the requester is on your contact list, otherwise ask.
    • Send to contacts, otherwise ignore - This will always send the read receipt if the requester is on your contact list, otherwise it will ignore the request.
    • Ignore request - This ignores all requests you receive.
  • Display attached images below the message - If enabled, this will display images as attachments below the message text.
  • Display emoticons in plain text message - Emoticons are the smiley faces you see from time to time in your emails, such as 😊. Each program or email client will have their own versions of these emoticons but they are all displayed by using the same code. If you prefer these to be switched off, disable this option and it will display these as text instead.

Advanced option - Default character set

The is an advanced option only. Please only use this option if you know what you are doing. Some email systems do not specify the character set when sending messages. In such rare cases the receiver (your webmail application) has to make an assumption how to display the special characters (e.g. éäç) and therefore uses this setting. You can use this to select the character set/language the majority of your email correspondents use.

Composing Messages

Image Placeholder
When you are composing an email rather than viewing one, you can use this page to edit your preferences.

Main Options

  • Compose in new window - When you press the compose button, it will open the compose area in a new window.
  • Compose HTML messages - This will automatically turn on HTML in your messages. This can be changed if you specify how HTML is enabled based on what you are replying to.
  • Automatically save draft - By default, if your webmail detects any changes to your composed email, it will save a new draft every minute into your drafts folder. If you wish to turn this off, set this to never. Manually saving a draft will still work.
  • Always request a Read receipt/delivery notification - When sending an email, you can request if you would like a Read receipt. This is an email you will receive once the receiver opens the email you sent. This is a delivery notification, which will email you once the email has been successfully sent to the recipient. Turning this on will set this for every email you write. Alternatively, you can activate this on a individual basis within each email. Please note, If the recipient has this option disabled, you may not receive a Read receipt/delivery notification.
  • Place replies in the folder of the message being replied to - This will save your reply to an email in the current folder instead of the sent folder (such as the inbox). This is useful if you would like your replies to remain within a thread. This only applies to emails sent after this is enabled.
  • When replying - Use this option to select where you would like your reply to be located in relation to the quoted text of the previous emails. You can also turn quoted text off using this option.
  • Message Forwarding - By default, when forwarding on an email, it will quote the original email within your email. This can be edited if required. You can change this so the forwarded message will become an attachment on your email instead.
  • Default font of HTML message - You can select the font type and size of the emails you compose.
  • Default action of reply to all - If you are replying to a mailing list, use this option to specify if you would like to email the recipients all together or just to the mailing list address.
  • Enable emoticons - This turns on/off the use of emoticons in the text toolbar when composing an email.

Signature Options

  • Automatically add signature - You can either add your signature to every email, only new emails or just replies and forwarded emails with this option.
  • Place signature below the quoted message - When replying to an email, you can choose whether to place your signature before or after the quoted text of the previous email.
  • When replying remove original signature from message - This will automatically remove your signature from the quoted text if it is detected.
  • Force standard separator in signatures - Your composed email and signature is separated by two dashes ("--") by default. Disabling this will remove these.
Compose Toolbar - Uncommon feature buttons

Image Placeholder

When composing an email, you can edit your text with the Compose toolbar. This toolbar also includes tools that are considered uncommon (shown above), which you might not use regularly. Using this setting, you can switch these off. If these are causing overlapping issues on a smaller screen, you can also set this to only appear on larger screens.

Advanced Options (Please only use if you know what you are doing!)

  • Attachment names - Sometimes recipients of your emails may have difficulties correctly seeing the names of your attached files. You can use this setting to adjust this in case you get complaints about garbled attachment names.
  • Use MIME encoding for 8-bit characters - This enables the sending message texts to use a default encoding. This will slightly increases the amount of data to be sent. Activate this option in case people cannot properly read message you send out.
  • Save in the browser's local storage (temporarily) - Browsers save the content and data of a website temporarily to make loading times faster. If you choose to not do this for security reasons, you can switch this on/off here.

Contacts

Image Placeholder
This area allows you to change preferences relating to your Contacts page (Address book). You can read more about your contact page here.

  • Default address book - If you have more then one Address book, you can choose which one contacts are automatically saved to.
  • List contacts as - When viewing your contacts, you can list them by either their display name or their names that you have saved for them in your address book.
  • Sorting column - This option will sort your contacts in descending order of the field you have chosen, such as last name or display name.
  • Rows per page - You can set how many contacts are listed before you are required to change the page with this option.
  • Skip alternative email addresses in autocomplete - When typing in the "to" field the system will try to autocomplete the email for you based on your contact list. With this option enabled it will skip any secondary emails each contact might have in your address book.

Special Folders

Image Placeholder
Special folders are the folders that every email account will always have such as drafts, sent and trash folders. These play specific roles such as saving your draft emails or storing all your incoming spam emails (junk folder).

This page will allow you to change this folder to another one on your account if you wish. This can be useful if your account has been set up elsewhere and it has started to use another folder such as deleted items instead of the trash folder.

Server Settings

Image Placeholder

These settings will allow you to edit what the system will do in certain circumstances on the server.

  • Mark the message as read on delete - With this option enabled, unread messages are marked as read when deleting them right away.
  • Flag the message for deletion instead of delete - Emails can be marked as deleted first before they are finally removed from a folder. This allows them to be unmarked for deletion later. In order to finally delete them, you can use the Compact command using the Cog icon at the bottom of your folder list.
  • Do not show deleted messages - This option will hide emails marked as deleted from being listed.
  • Permanently delete messages in the spam folder - Messages in the junk folder are moved to the trash first when deleting them. Enabling this option will skip this and delete the emails in the junk folder immediately.
  • Clear "Deleted Items" on logout - This will empty your trash folder when you logout of your account. Be careful with this option as this will remove them from your account completely. Contact our helpdesk at help@aluminati.net if you need to recover any lost emails.
